What is Halotherapy?

Believe it or not, the origins of modern-day Halotherapy, or salt therapy as it is also known, date back nearly a thousand years. In the 12th century, it was common practice in Eastern Europe for people to seek out salt caves in order to heal certain maladies. Fast-forward to the 1800s, when it was discovered that Polish miners working in salt mines rarely suffered from common respiratory ailments. Research would show that it was the salty air they were breathing in that kept them in good respiratory health. This led to salt mines and salt caves becoming popular tourist destinations as people from all over the world sought out salt therapy to ease their lung problems.

And so what we now know as Halotherapy was born.

Halotherapy is the practice of relaxing in a salt room where a halogenerator breaks down salt into tiny particles that disperse and circulate throughout the room. Receiving Halotherapy is as simple as relaxing, taking deep, restorative breaths and allowing tiny salt particles to enter your lungs and skin.

Benefits of Halotherapy

Given that salt therapy has origins dating back almost a thousand years and its popularity has been well-established, it has also been the subject of research studies that have outlined the benefits of Halotherapy. Salt is both natural and safe, and also has such beneficial properties as:

  • It is mucoactive, meaning it can clear mucus from airways.

  • It is antibacterial and can help prevent infections.

  • It has immunity-boosting properties.

  • It is anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic.

Because of these properties, research has shown that Halotherapy can be used as part of a plan to treat such conditions as asthma, bronchitis, respiratory allergies, lung infections, COPD and smoking-related respiratory issues, cold and cough, pneumonia, throat infections, and other ailments. The benefits of Halotherapy can also be helpful as part of a treatment plan to mitigate breathing issues brought on by COVID-19.

The benefits of Halotherapy are not limited to just the respiratory system. It can also be useful in repairing and protecting skin cells, as well as treating acne and rosacea, eczema, skin allergies, psoriasis, dermatitis, rashes, and wrinkles and signs of skin aging.

Both history and studies have shown the risks of Halotherapy to be minimal and mostly limited to simply increased coughing and mucus secretion as your nasal passages clear out. In some rare cases, skin irritation or conjunctivitis may occur.
